31 year old Martyn Culley, son of team mate Barrie lives in
Basingstoke, Hampshire. Martyn at the age of 19 was one
of the youngest drivers in the UK to obtain a race
licence whilst suffering from Type 1 diabetes. In order
to obtain the licence, Martyn had to spend a year
recording blood sugar levels in order to prove they were
stable and that he would be safe to drive a racing car.
He started in grass track racing in 1991, and was
Aldermaston Track Junior Champion 1995. In 1998 he
switched to circuit racing and raced in the 750 Motor
Club Hot Hatch Championship, at the wheel of a Fiesta
XR2. He achieved third in class and fourth overall in
2003.
Martyn joined the Volkswagen Racing Cup in 2004, taking
12th in championship and eight top-10 finishes. He
finished an excellent fourth overall in 2005, taking
eight top-six race finishes from 12 starts.
2006 brought about Martyn’s most successful season to
date. He had a superb season claiming two race wins and
three further podium visits on his way to a magnificent
second place overall in the championship.
2007 was a disappointing and accident-punctuated final
season in his venerable Vento. He finished 10th in
championship with 2 podium finishes.
2008 was Martyn’s first year with his new car, the VW
Beetle RSi 3.2 V6. The car was not without its problems
and a big crash at Thruxton forced the car out of a
number of races. His fourth place at Rockingham was the
season highlight.
